Has anyone on this board used canned goat milk when making oatmeal, milk and honey soap? I had a boatload of notes on this process and somehow cant seem to dig them up fro my computer sad.gif It called for either freezing the liquid soap and then adding the lye to the frozen milk. Somewhere along the line I remember someone saying that it smelled a tad of ammonia, which cleared up, turned a beautiful caramel brown ...

If anyone has made soap with liquid goat milk, can you please give me some advice? I do crockpot soap. I havent soaped in a while and I am trying to refresh my brain.

Thank you all

Yep made some last week. I didn't freeze just diluted and added at trace. It had a gel spot but not to bad and only a very slight anmoia smell but it's gone after 2 days.

Bubbles, I crock pot my Oatmeal, Milk & Honey soap (it's the only one I do crock pot!) and I add the oatmeal and liquid goat milk at trace. I throw the honey in with my oils at the beginning...as a sugar it helps to keep the batter loose.

I just made some today, taking advantage of the wintry weather to cool off my lye solution, oils and to chill the goatmilk. I only used the crockpot to melt my hard oils. I didn't want any heat to speed up gelling once it was all mixed. Out of the total water amount, I used 2/3 of it to dissolve my lye, and 1/3 as canned goatmilk. I added the goatmilk after mixing oils with the lye solution. I used a makeshift slab mold (lined cardboard box, poured 1.25 inches deep so it would cool quickly), and set it out on my screened in porch for a few hours. Now it's sitting in my cold garage. It's been over a year since I made GM soap by CP, but this is the way I always do it. HTH

I just had a "heal of the right hand to the forehead" moment...using the slab mold for milk soaps is perfect to keep them from heating up! Thanks Naomi!

Bubbles,

I use canned GM for my OMH soap, but I only do mine CP because I'm afraid it'll turn brown when it gels. I dilute my GM 1:1 with water and freeze half, to which I add my lye and chill the rest, and I add that other half to my lye mixture right before mixing. Keep in mind, though, that this is for CP, not HP. I just did a batch yesterday which is still out in the garage.

I think a few of us are taking advantage of this cold weather to knock out some milk soaps, since we don't have to put them in the fridge!

I do! I chill the milk first to slushy texture and then add my lye to it. Sometimes I use it full strength, and sometimes I dilute it. There's no method to my madness; it just depends on what I feel like!

I made some last week by using the water half of the total liquids (1/2 water, 1/2 canned GM) in the croc pot and I added the goat milk after the cook. I used about 10% extra water to keep the mixture workable. When it cooked it rose like a cake but I stirred it down, added the GM, and FO, separated out some for coloring and swirrled away. Turned out great! This is the first time I tried this method of HP with GM. I did not have to chill anything either since it was already cooked. HTH

Marj, did you notice any ammonia smell after adding the GM? I would love to try this. It would make things a lot easier, and I'd be able to use my loaf molds which I prefer over slab.

No ma'am. I was totally surprised. No smell, no muss, no fuss....no gel ring lol. I am still amazed that this worked. Cooking the soap with 1/2 the required liquid was intimidating...wasn't sure it would work but it did. I did stir quite a bit to make sure everything was incorporated. Last time I tried this I used frozen GM but this is not necessary and in fact, made it harder to mix in cuz it was hard to melt evenly and I ended up with some GM blobs in the final soap...nothing bad just a couple of ighter colored splotches in the bars. Give it a try....worked great for me! Stay warm (a message from the snowy gulf coast!) brrr cool.gif

Just curious Babs ... I keep seeing that sugar keeps the batter loose ... how does this work? When you say its loose, does it pour like CP soap ... assuming you are crockpotting your soap ... Thanks in advance ...

I don't understand the chemistry behind it...I just do it since it seems to help. And no, my crockpot soap has never been pourable like CP but the sugar and sodium lactate at least keep it workable and I don't have to cram it into the mold smile.gif . I have never really worked at fine tuning the crockpot so as a result only do my oatmeal, milk and honey in it since that's the only way I can get it to work out! Actually, I'm getting better at my milk soaps CP so I may have to try it again!

I want to do this but I'm afraid of volcano or the milk getting too hot. I cook at 180 in the oven- maybe I'll try in the crockpot- my recipe doesn't volcano normally so do you think it will be ok?

I had no issues at all- I used a bigger than normal pot and a little lower than normal oven temp and it worked fine.
The F/O well not so much, I think my soap was too hot when I put it in but it could be a sneaky one that comes back when it sits hopefully.
The soap is moisturizing as heck- woo hoo!
